Track and trace: a fixed or portable system?

All-Connects' track and trace solutions are available in both fixed and portable versions. But how do you make this choice? In this blog, we take a closer look at the advantages of the two variants.

What is the main difference between a fixed and portable system? A fixed track and trace system is mounted in the vehicle you want to track. Consequently, you cannot simply take it away when you no longer need it.

A portable system, on the other hand, is more flexible and can be moved more easily. Therefore, it is the best solution if you need a registration system temporarily. Or if you only use the track and trace system to know where the vehicle is.

Depending on means of transportation

An important factor in your choice between a fixed and portable system is the type of transportation vehicle you want to track. For example, a fixed system is more suitable for trucks, commercial vehicles, tractors, vans, yard vehicles, and so on. In short: for larger means of transportation that you want to track for a long period of time.

In turn, a portable system is best used with trailers, motorcycles, bobcats and trailers. Why? These means of transportation often simply don't have the space for a fixed system.

Internal battery

The large internal battery of a portable system has the advantage that you do not have to continuously power the device, which comes in handy in motorcycles, trailers or trailers, for example. You can also track a vintage car perfectly this way without the risk of having the track and trace system drain the battery. Even the older 6 Volt vintage cars are eligible for a portable system.

Installation

We often connect the traditional, fixed system to the vehicle's wiring. The installation cannot be done quickly yourself; it is best left to one of our experienced installers. The loose system does not necessarily require an installer. You can probably connect the system yourself to the vehicle's OBDII port in no time. So you are quickly and easily provided with a track and trace system.

Private use

Employees sometimes use company cars for private use, and then, of course, they don't want to be tracked. Therefore, the fixed track and trace systems are equipped with a private button. This allows employees to turn off the operation of the tracking system outside office hours. With portable systems, this option is not always easy.
