A tracker in a vehicle is connected to the vehicle's electrical system. But a trailer at a depot, a container at a construction site, a compressor, or a portable toilet does not have one. Yet it is precisely this equipment that is moved most often, left unattended the longest, and is most likely to disappear from sight.
There are devices available that operate independently: they run for years on a single battery, don't require any wiring, and are integrated into the same dashboard as your vehicles.

Three Ways to Track Equipment Without Power
Which device you need depends on one question: Does the asset need to be able to transmit its own position, or is it sufficient for it to be recognized as soon as a vehicle comes into the vicinity? The latter option is much cheaper and is more than sufficient for many types of equipment.

A small tag without its own GPS. It continuously transmits a Bluetooth signal that is picked up by a nearby tracker, such as one in your tractor or van. This way, you know which trailer is attached to which vehicle and where an asset was last seen, without having to install a full-fledged tracker on every piece of equipment.

Which device is right for your equipment?
If your equipment is usually stored at a depot where vehicles pass by daily, an AC.BLE tag is sufficient. If you need to know where an asset is at all times—even if no vehicle comes near it for weeks— you’ll need an AC.FLEX device. For equipment stored indoors, that would be the AC.FLEX-B or AC.FLEX-R.

Frequently Asked Questions About Battery-Powered Trackers
What is a tracker without power?
A tracker without a power supply runs on its own battery and therefore does not need to be connected to a vehicle's electrical system. This allows you to track equipment that does not have a power source: trailers, containers, machinery, or stored equipment.
What is the difference between an AC.BLE tag and an AC.FLEX tracker?
An AC.FLEX tracker determines its own position and transmits that information to the platform. This means it works anywhere, even if no vehicle passes by for weeks.
An AC.BLE tag does not have its own GPS. It transmits a Bluetooth signal that is picked up by a nearby tracker, usually in a vehicle. You can then see where the asset was located at the moment it was detected. This is more cost-effective and sufficient for equipment that regularly comes into proximity with your vehicles.
How long does the battery last?
That depends on the device and how often it transmits its location. AC.FLEX devices last up to 6 to 8 years, while an AC.BLE tag lasts about 5 years.
You'll automatically receive a notification when the battery is running low. These are standard replaceable lithium batteries, so you don't have to charge anything or send anything back.
How often does the tracker transmit location data?
You can set this yourself: at set intervals, once a day, or only when there's movement. The less often you use it, the longer the battery will last.
Do I need to have the tracker installed?
No. No wiring is required. The devices are mounted using screws, magnets, zip ties, or adhesive tape, depending on the model and where you place them.
Does a tracker also work indoors, in a warehouse or storage facility?
GPS signals often don't get through indoors. That's where the AC.FLEX-B comes in; it uses Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in addition to satellites to determine its location.
Please note regarding Bluetooth tags: metal and concrete weaken the signal. Therefore, do not install a tag inside a closed metal enclosure or chassis.
What if my container or machine is stolen?
You'll receive an immediate notification as soon as an asset moves or leaves a geofence zone. This allows you to take quick action and report the location to the police.
Can I integrate this with my rental or asset management software?
Yes, through the FLEET.connect API. The locations and usage data for your equipment will then be sent directly to your own rental, scheduling, or ERP system.
