What is regulated by law for driving hours and rest periods in road transport?

For the employee who drives a truck (combination) with an authorized total weight of more than 3,500 kg and with a payload (according to registration certificate) of more than 500 kg, the labor laws for transportation apply. This means that instead of the general working and rest times, the standards of the schedule below apply. Unless the company or vehicle falls under one of the general or special exceptions also listed in the schedule.
The usefulness of a digital tachograph
The digital tachograph is an electronic device that is installed in the vehicle and records the following data:
- the driver's driving and rest periods
- the speed of the vehicle
- the distance travelled
- irregularities
This information is stored in the device's memory and on the driver's driver card. The purpose of the tachograph is to improve road safety, ensure driver working conditions, promote fair competition and facilitate the management of transport companies. All data can be retrieved during an inspection. The digital tachograph is mandatory in all European Union countries and Switzerland.
