Below we answer frequently asked questions about upgrading your fleet from 2G to 4G. Is your question not listed? Don't hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help you and can also assist you in scheduling the upgrade to 4G.
Can AllConnects simply replace the SIM cards so that my units run on 4G instead of 2G?
No, it's not just about SIM cards, but also hardware compatibility. 2G units are not technically capable of operating on 4G networks. So it's not as simple as replacing a SIM card-the hardware must also be replaced with a 4G-compatible unit.
Why do I need to replace my 2G hardware?
Telecom providers worldwide are phasing out 2G networks to make room for more modern and efficient technologies such as 4G and 5G. This means that devices that rely on 2G will stop working after a certain date. By switching now, you will avoid interruptions in your business operations and continue to benefit from reliable connectivity.
Do I have to pay to upgrade to 4G?
Yes, there are one-time costs associated with 2G unit replacement, installation and new hardware. These costs vary by fleet and by the type of 4G unit needed. We can create a transparent cost breakdown together so you know where you stand in advance. Although as a supplier we cannot offer large discounts, we do offer an efficient and smooth transition, allowing you to move forward immediately with robust and reliable hardware for years to come.
Why doesn't AllConnects offer a discount on replacement?
We understand that a technological transition requires investment, but it is important to realize that this is a necessary and inevitable development. Technology is changing, and while 2G was reliable for years, the immediate future is 4G. The investment in new hardware ensures that your fleet will continue to operate without interruption, and like your current AllConnects hardware, our 4G units are likely to last much longer than the predicted lifespan. Plus, this technology doesn't change nearly as quickly as consumer electronics like smartphones and laptops, so you'll benefit from this again for years to come.
How long will the replacement take?
Installation of a new 4G unit takes on average between 30 minutes and 1 hour per vehicle, depending on the type of vehicle and connections. We can provide an estimate in advance based on your fleet, so we can plan efficiently and minimize the impact on your daily operations.
Why switch now and not wait longer?
The phase-out of 2G is already underway and will be completed at different times for each provider. This means that some companies will need to take action sooner than others. It is wise not to wait until the last minute, because the demand for installations will increase as the deadline approaches. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to experience wait times or operational disruptions.
Note: Every provider has a different end date. For example, in the Netherlands, KPN has permanently stopped 2G since Dec. 1, 2025. Other European providers may have earlier or later deadlines. Read our blog on the phase-out of 2G in Europe here.
What are the benefits of upgrading 4G?
By upgrading to 4G, you benefit from a more stable and faster connection. This brings several benefits, including:
- Higher reliability - Less downtime and failures
- Faster data processing - More efficient tracking and reporting
- Fit for future technologies - Compatibility with new software and functionalities
- Improved coverage - In most areas, 4G has stronger coverage than 2G
By upgrading now, you ensure your fleet is ready for the future and avoid operational problems when 2G is permanently discontinued.
What happens if you do nothing and keep running with 2G devices?
Failure to take action will negatively impact your business, fleet and employees. The 2G units will continue to work until the 2G network is discontinued. Once this happens, the unit no longer works and you can no longer use our services. This means that vehicle tracking stops, the digital tachograph no longer works and your company can no longer collect the data needed for business and tax purposes.
How will the transition affect the continuity of your business?
If you do not take action, your 2G units will continue to work until the 2G network is switched off. From then on, your track & trace functionalities will no longer work, with the following consequences:
- Vehicle tracking stops → You lose track of your fleet
- Digital tachograph and trip recording no longer work → Problems with compliance and administration
- No data exchange → No more insights into performance and usage
By upgrading on time, you will avoid these problems and ensure that your business operations can continue uninterrupted.

The transition from 2G to 4G is inevitable and necessary to keep your fleet operational. AllConnects is ready to help you with this, with a smooth and efficient transition.
