Smart Tacho 2: what are the improvements?

The second generation of tachographs (G2v2) offers several improvements over the first generation of smart tachographs. According to Regulation (EU) No. 165/2014 - the rules for tachographs in road transport - the new tachographs include the following functionalities:

  1. Registration of border crossings

The Galileo satellite navigation system (GNSS) has been enhanced with the ability to automatically record border crossings. The new tachographs can automatically record the position and time of border crossings and require the driver to record loading and unloading operations, including the type of cargo (passengers or goods).

The goal is to reduce the risk of tampering through better documentation of cab rides and driver deployment.

  1. Mandatory ITS interface and software updates.

It will become mandatory for tachographs to have an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) interface. This provides enhanced communication capabilities with external transportation systems, such as fleet management systems, via Bluetooth.

In addition, the new tachometers ensure that future regulations can be complied with through software updates, without having to replace the hardware.

  1. Enhanced short-range communication (DSRC) for driving times

Like the first generation of smart tachographs, the version 2 tachograph records data in its internal memory, part of which can be read remotely by control authorities.

However, optimized short-range communication (DSRC) allows authorities to access more data than before, such as actual driving times. This enables more efficient screening and means that companies and drivers who adhere to driving and rest periods are less likely to be fully inspected at roadside checks.

  1. Extended memory storage

Driver card storage capacity is expanded from 28 to 56 days thanks to G2v2 tachograph cards.

This provides:

  • More visibility for fleet managers, allowing them to monitor longer periods of driving and rest periods.
  • Better enforcement by monitoring bodies, which can more easily verify compliance with the rules.

To enable this expansion, a switch to new driver cards will be required. This is not currently mandatory, but an option for companies that want a broader view. The switch will be gradual as driver cards expire and need to be renewed.

Important: All existing tachograph cards remain compatible with second-generation tachographs and vice versa.
